Step by step
- Clean the space. Arrange your image or murti and materials. Wash your hands and sit quietly.
- Bring the purpose of your worship to mind. Remember the divine in the manner of your household tradition.
- Light the lamp on a safe, stable surface. Offer water and flowers if this is part of your family practice.
- Read a related prayer below that belongs to your practice. Open the available meanings for unfamiliar words.
- Offer naivedya. Perform your familiar aarti if customary. After the prayer, share prasad.
- Sit quietly for a moment, then put materials away. Do not leave a burning lamp unattended.

Living tradition and public art
Kolkata’s Durga Puja brings worship, image-making, pandals, art and community gatherings together. UNESCO recognises this named living heritage tradition; the inscription is not scientific certification of a religious claim. Bengali diaspora communities also hold celebrations locally, with differences in programme and procedure.

कोलकाता की दुर्गा पूजा देवी-उपासना, प्रतिमा-निर्माण, मंडप, कला और सामुदायिक मिलन को साथ लाती है। UNESCO ने इस नामित जीवित परंपरा को अपनी सूची में दर्ज किया है। इस मान्यता को किसी धार्मिक दावे का वैज्ञानिक प्रमाण न समझें। बंगाली प्रवासी समुदाय भी अपने स्थान पर पूजा करते हैं। हर सामुदायिक मंच का कार्यक्रम और विधि एक जैसे नहीं होते।
Preparing to visit
Check the organiser’s official address, access, aarti, prasad and accessibility information. Ask before photographing an image or ceremony, and keep routes clear during busy periods. If the language is unfamiliar, ask for an introduction or translation. Reading the available hymn’s explanation may help with some imagery.
दर्शन की तैयारी
आयोजक की आधिकारिक सूचना से पता, प्रवेश, आरती, प्रसाद और पहुँच-सुविधा देखें। प्रतिमा या अनुष्ठान की तस्वीर लेने से पहले अनुमति पूछें। व्यस्त समय में रास्ता खुला रखें और पूजा करने वालों की जगह का सम्मान करें। भाषा नई लगे तो आयोजक से छोटे परिचय या अनुवाद के लिए पूछ सकते हैं। उपलब्ध स्तोत्र का अर्थ पढ़कर जाने से कुछ प्रतीकों को समझने में सहायता मिलेगी।
Ritual days and programme scope
Distinguish ritual days, particular ceremonies and public cultural events. An overseas weekend programme does not itself establish the ritual date. Confirm religious timing with the organiser and local Panchang. The library’s complete selected Mahishasuramardini hymn is not the entire Durga Saptashati. A specialised puja needs its own detailed procedure and guidance.
