Step by step
- Clean the space. Arrange your image or murti and materials. Wash your hands and sit quietly.
- Bring the purpose of your worship to mind. Remember the divine in the manner of your household tradition.
- Light the lamp on a safe, stable surface. Offer water and flowers if this is part of your family practice.
- Read a related prayer below that belongs to your practice. Open the available meanings for unfamiliar words.
- Offer naivedya. Perform your familiar aarti if customary. After the prayer, share prasad.
- Sit quietly for a moment, then put materials away. Do not leave a burning lamp unattended.

In many Shaiva traditions, Shivaratri is a special night of worship of Shiva. Meditation, japa, recitation and temple worship differ by household.

Local night and intention
Confirm the worship night and fast-ending window for your city and tradition. An Indian calendar date cannot simply be transferred overseas. Ask your temple about the night-watch sequence; a simple household puja can follow a different scope. Choose an intention such as attentive remembrance, a complete reading, service or restraint in conduct. Quantity of materials is not a measure of devotion. Keep lamps on stable surfaces and handle offerings responsibly afterwards.
