Solar and regional context
Makar Sankranti concerns the Sun’s entry into Makara in a sidereal zodiac. It should not be assigned solely from a memorised Gregorian date. The religious Uttarayan celebration and the astronomical December solstice do not occur on the same date. Tamil Pongal’s multi-day traditions, Gujarat’s kite celebrations and other harvest observances have distinct identities.

Pongal may include a ceremonial boiling of the dish and traditions honouring cattle; respect the local practice and the care of animals.
