The Kerala setting
Onam belongs to Kerala’s Chingam season and Thiruvonam observance. The religious-cultural narrative welcoming Mahabali and the joy of harvest are important contexts. People from different communities also celebrate it in Kerala. Preserve its regional character rather than turning it into an interchangeable northern Indian worship ceremony.

ओणम केरल के चिंगम मास और तिरुवोणम से जुड़ा उत्सव है। महाबली के स्वागत की धार्मिक-सांस्कृतिक कथा और फसल का आनन्द इसके महत्वपूर्ण संदर्भ हैं। अलग धर्मों और समुदायों के लोग भी केरल में इसे मनाते हैं। इसे केवल उत्तर भारतीय पूजा-विधि में बदलकर इसकी क्षेत्रीय पहचान न खोएँ।
Prepare the home and meal
Choose available flowers and a space for the pookkalam that keeps walkways clear. Plan the sadya around the number of guests, ingredients and individual dietary needs. If banana leaves are unavailable, serve the meal respectfully in suitable alternatives. Where worship forms part of the household celebration, follow that family’s procedure.

पुक्कलम के लिए उपलब्ध फूल और ऐसा स्थान चुनें जिससे रास्ता बाधित न हो। साद्या के लिए लोगों की संख्या, सामग्री और भोजन की व्यक्तिगत जरूरतें पहले पूछें। केले का पत्ता उपलब्ध न हो तो सम्मानपूर्वक दूसरे उपयुक्त पात्र में भोजन दे सकते हैं। स्थानीय परिवार की परंपरा में पूजा हो तो उसी विधि को अपनाएँ।
A shared community celebration
Offer guests opportunities to join the floral decoration, songs, games and shared meal. A community event may be scheduled on a different day from the observance itself; state the religious date and public programme date separately. Reduce food and decoration waste and clean the space after the celebration.
समुदाय और साझा उत्सव
फूलों की सजावट, गीत, खेल और साझा भोजन में अतिथियों को शामिल होने का अवसर दें। आयोजनों की तारीख स्थानीय सामुदायिक कार्यक्रम से भी अलग हो सकती है; धार्मिक दिवस और सार्वजनिक कार्यक्रम-दिन अलग लिखें। भोजन तथा सजावट की बर्बादी कम रखें और उत्सव के बाद स्थान साफ़ करें।
