The Brahmasphutasiddhanta includes arithmetic rules involving zero and positive and negative quantities. These are significant contributions in the history of Indian mathematics.
A precise limit
Not all of its rules for division by zero are accepted in modern mathematics. Recognizing a contribution does not require describing every rule as correct.
Several uses of zero
A symbol marking an empty place in positional notation and arithmetic rules treating zero as a number are distinct developments. The zero in 205 indicates that there are no tens. Distinguishing 20 from 2 helps explain place value. Brahmagupta’s rules discuss positive quantities, negative quantities and zero. Modern examples include 7 + 0 = 7, 7 − 7 = 0 and 7 × 0 = 0. These examples illustrate the subject rather than translating a Sanskrit rule word for word.
The difficulty of division by zero
In ordinary modern arithmetic 7 ÷ 0 is undefined. If its value were x, multiplication would require 0 × x = 7, which is impossible for an ordinary number. Likewise 0 ÷ 0 does not determine a unique value because 0 × x = 0 holds for many x. Recognising a historical achievement does not require calling every historical rule correct by modern standards. Explain both the successful rules and later revisions. A history of zero draws on several texts, inscriptions and uses.
