Brahman refers to ultimate reality; atman refers to the self or spiritual self. Brahman and the deity Brahma are different terms.
दो महत्वपूर्ण शब्द
ब्रह्म परम वास्तविकता का शब्द है; आत्मा स्वयं या आध्यात्मिक स्वरूप के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है। ब्रह्म और देवता ब्रह्मा अलग शब्द हैं।
Different interpretations
Advaita emphasizes non-duality. Vishishtadvaita and Dvaita offer different accounts of the relationship. One school’s explanation should not be presented as the only Hindu position.
अलग व्याख्याएँ
अद्वैत अभेद पर जोर देता है। विशिष्टाद्वैत और द्वैत अलग संबंध बताते हैं। किसी एक मत को सभी हिंदुओं का एकमात्र विश्वास कहना सही नहीं होगा।
Three terms that need distinction
Brahman can refer to ultimate reality in philosophy. Brahma names a deity; brahmana can concern a social or traditional identity and also a class of Vedic literature. Similar English spellings can obscure these distinctions. Determine a term’s meaning from its grammar and textual context. Treating one philosophical explanation as every Hindu’s identical belief creates further confusion.
Upanishads and interpretation
Upanishadic great sayings occur inside particular dialogues and teachings. Chandogya chapter 6 develops tat tvam asi through examples and repeated instruction. Advaita, Vishishtadvaita and Dvaita explain the relationship between self and ultimate reality differently. A single translated phrase does not settle an entire philosophical debate; read the surrounding dialogue and the commentary of the tradition concerned.
Begin with a question about self
Atman is not everywhere an exact synonym for everyday personality or mind. Asking “Who am I?” can involve distinct questions about body, experience, memory and consciousness within a text. Do not use philosophical language to dismiss another person’s existence or experience. Study becomes clearer when you first identify definitions, then the textual example and then its interpretation.
Three recurring Vedanta questions
What is Brahman, what is atman, and how are they related to the world? Vedanta traditions answer differently. Advaita prominently discusses non-difference, Vishishtadvaita has its own account of relationship, and Dvaita emphasises real distinction. This is an introductory map rather than all the arguments of each school. Do not universalise a teacher’s statement about unity or difference without its philosophical context. Identify both the passage and commentary. Reading a commentator’s reasoning goes beyond reading one translation.
Care with English equivalents
Self, soul, consciousness and ultimate reality can be helpful English terms, but their meanings are not identical in every philosophical discussion. The question “who am I?” is not merely a personality test or a list of preferences. Establish the word’s meaning from its dialogue. Choose a passage, read two interpretations and distinguish what it explicitly says from the commentator’s reasoning. A disagreement is not automatically a mistake. Clarify whether your question concerns consciousness, existence, God or personal identity; that makes further study more precise.
English
