The original verse

It is poetry in the childhood narrative of Hanuman mistaking the Sun for fruit.

The popular numerical interpretation

Assuming jug = 12,000, sahasra = 1,000 and yojana = 8 miles gives 96,000,000 miles, or 154,497,024 km. That is approximately 3.27% above 1 AU, defined as 149,597,870.7 km.

What does this establish?

The verse does not itself establish the two disputed assumptions or an intention to specify a modern astronomical measurement. Historical values of the yojana vary. An exact scientific correspondence is therefore not established.

A changing distance

Earth’s orbit is elliptical. NASA lists perihelion and aphelion distances of about 147.095 and 152.100 million km. The definition of an AU and the actual distance on a given day are distinct.

Check the calculation yourself

Use the comparison tool to change the assumed length of a yojana. The multiplication is 12,000 × 1,000 × 8 = 96,000,000 miles. Multiplying by 1.609344 kilometres per mile produces 154,497,024 kilometres. The arithmetic is correct for these inputs; it does not show that the text fixes those inputs. A numerical resemblance and a demonstrated method are different. Choosing another unit can produce another nearby number. Establish the historical unit independently before comparing the result with an independent measurement.

Respect for poetry and the question of evidence

The Chalisa praises the extraordinary power of the young Hanuman. A devotee may understand the episode as divine lila. Literary meaning, religious truth and modern measurement need not be treated as the same kind of statement. When explaining the comparison in English, include the original verse, the chosen assumptions and the actual difference. Describe it as a popular modern interpretation. Since Earth–Sun distance varies, identify whether the comparison uses a defined unit, a mean value or the distance on a particular date.
