Shadows and alignment

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon lies between Earth and Sun. A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. The Moon’s orbital tilt prevents an eclipse at every new or full moon.

Historical context

Aryabhatiya, Gola 37–38, discusses a shadow-based explanation of eclipses. Agreement on this mechanism does not imply that every detail of the ancient astronomical model matches modern science.

Solar and lunar eclipses differ

In a solar eclipse the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on part of Earth. In a lunar eclipse Earth lies between the Sun and Moon and the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow. An eclipse need not be visible from every country. Eclipses do not occur at every new or full moon because the Moon’s orbit is tilted relative to Earth’s orbital plane. The alignment must be sufficiently close. Local visibility, eclipse stage and the position above the horizon matter when planning an observation.

Rahu–Ketu and astronomical calculation

In traditional graha vocabulary Rahu and Ketu are associated with the lunar nodes. Puranic stories present religious narratives, while mathematical astronomy can describe positions and shadows. Each genre has its context. A tithi display is not a local eclipse prediction. This daily calculator does not provide a complete eclipse timetable. Follow NASA’s observing guidance: direct solar viewing requires appropriate solar protection, and ordinary sunglasses are not solar filters.
