In the Mahabharata, Krishna is Arjuna’s charioteer and interlocutor; the Gita belongs to that battlefield crisis. Bhagavata narratives develop other contexts through childhood, Vrindavan and devotion. The literary settings should not be collapsed into one undifferentiated story. Pushtimarga, Gaudiya and other Vaishnava traditions develop different devotional relationships. Radha has profound importance in particular traditions, but her presence should not be assumed to be identical in every text.
The poetry of sweetness
Madhurashtakam is an eight-stanza hymn associated with Vallabhacharya. It calls Krishna’s appearance, conduct, music, relationships and surroundings sweet. Here sweetness concerns loving attraction and devotional experience, rather than sugar alone. Our selected witness’s seventh stanza mentions Radha and meeting; other recensions read yuktam/muktam. The edition note identifies the reading used. Sense summaries are separate from word-for-word scholarly translation.
Beginning the Gita
Reading all 18 chapters reveals a developing conversation about action, knowledge, meditation and devotion. Gita 2.47 should not be isolated as a command to become inactive; 12.13–20 discusses the devotee’s conduct. Our new original-text witness preserves 701 verses because it includes Arjuna’s additional question at 13.1. Numbering differs from 700-verse editions. Hindi and English meaning layers remain unfinished, and the reader shows that status explicitly.
The form depicted here
Bhagavata Purana 10.21.5. Peacock feather, yellow karnikara-style ear flower, yellow/golden garment, flower garland and flute. Crown, blue complexion, cow and architecture are conventional supplements. The botanical identification of the depicted ear flower as karnikara is not certified.
इस चित्र का नामित रूप
भागवत पुराण 10.21.5. मोरपंख, कर्णिकार जैसा पीला कर्ण-पुष्प, पीत/सुनहरा वस्त्र, वनमाला और वेणु। मुकुट, नीला वर्ण, गाय और स्थापत्य चित्रकार के परंपरागत पूरक हैं। कर्णिकार पुष्प की वनस्पति-पहचान का चित्रात्मक प्रमाणन शेष है।
The Gita’s dialogue and eighteen chapters
The Gita is a dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna on the battlefield, addressing action, duty, self, knowledge, devotion and liberation. Before treating a famous verse as its whole message, read Arjuna’s question and Krishna’s response with the neighbouring passages. The selected witness here contains 701 verses because it separately counts Arjuna’s opening question in chapter 13. This differs from familiar 700-verse editions. No verse was invented to achieve a count: the source’s sequence is retained. Complete Hindi and English meaning layers are separate work and their absence is visible.
Sweetness and Vrindavan poetry
Madhurashtakam repeatedly returns to sweetness in Krishna’s form, actions and the devotee’s experience. Reading its eight principal stanzas with the closing unit preserves the effect of repetition. The portrait’s Venu-gita reference is Bhagavata 10.21.5, associated with peacock feather, ear flower, yellow garment, garland and flute. Krishna teaching in the Gita and Krishna playing in the forest have different narrative settings. Naming the portrait’s source helps the reader recognise that context.
