Planets and the Sun

The modern solar system has eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The Sun is a star. The Moon is Earth’s natural satellite.

Why an orbit?

Gravity pulls a planet toward the Sun while its motion carries it forward. Together these produce an orbit. The diagram is not to scale in either size or distance.

Planet, star and satellite

The Sun is a star, Earth a planet and the Moon Earth’s natural satellite. Eight major planets orbit the Sun. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are the inner rocky planets; Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune lie farther out. Smaller bodies, comets and dwarf planets also belong to the Solar System. Planets mainly reflect sunlight. A bright point in the night sky need not be a star. Identification depends on date, location and direction, so colour alone is not a reliable identification method.

Gravity and motion together produce an orbit

An orbiting body continually changes direction. Gravity pulls it towards the Sun while its velocity carries it forward. A useful introductory picture is a falling body moving far enough sideways that the curved surface below keeps falling away. This is a simplified explanation rather than a complete numerical model. Accurate predictions account for measurements and interactions with other bodies. Astronomical calculation does not establish a person’s destiny scientifically; religious interpretations of grahas belong to their religious context.
